Today is the birthday of one of the greatest guitarrists of the world: Mr. Adrian Frederik Smith.

What can be said about this great guitarist? Well, we can say that when he was fifteen he dropped school to dedicate himself only to the music. That he did not care about his parent’s opinions and went on pursuing his dream. That he fought until he could get what he wanted. That even though he had to strive a lot, for his beginning was no piece of cake, he never gave up.

Inspiration for many! Even those whose did not have the guitar as their favourite musical instrument, after listening to his riffs and solos began to appreciate it. I for one (Sabrina) have always had a special fancy for the drums. But after I started listening to Maiden, after listening to all those wonderful solos, began to like the guitar better and I am even thinking about learning how to play the guitar. And, of course, my inspiration will be Maste H. who never cried or got emotional listening to some of his solos. I cried my eyes out listening to Wasted Years, Children and the Mercenary.

Besides being a great guitarrista, he is also an excellent singer. I believe many have heard Reach Out, Live to Learn, Make Up Your Mind, Going Down (sang at Nicko’s 60th birthday). He has got an amazing voice! It is more fit for the blues.

I believe many of you have seen his projects outside Maiden: A.S.A.P., The Untouchables, Psycho Motel, Primal Rock Rebellion. And his former band, Evil Ways, which later was known as Urchin. All these works are amazing. Adrian is one of these great musicians who can play any gender and be good.

His solos have got feelings, nothing is by chance. He is more straight ahead and plays his solos live with the same perfection as in the studio, that is something he really cares about. On stage he is more discret, if comparing to his fellows guitarrists, which are more outgoing, running up and down (e.g.: Janick Gers). He prefers to stay on his own, as he said once: “I never look like very excited outside. Everything keeps burning inside me, but not always I let it show. I prefer to keep it to myself – if I can.” The only movement he makes is to throw his head back (something I love).

We are thankful to Michaek Schenker, Ritchie Blackmore, among others, for inspiring Adrian Smith. And of course, we are thankful to the great Dave Murray, for teaching Adrian how to play the guitar.

Happy birthday, Adrian! Many happy returns. We wish you an amazing day! Enjoy it a lot!
